Key figures for tourism in the Ardennes

What indicators are these?

Based on a working method that we have reproduced from one year to the next, thus allowing comparisons on similar bases, we wanted to be as exhaustive as possible. Thus, we analyze the results of all types of accommodation, hotels, campsites, group accommodation, furnished accommodation and bed and breakfasts, whether they are classified, labeled or not, but also places where tourists are welcomed. , tourist offices and seasonal reception points, as well as places to visit, whether they are monuments, museums or major sites for tourist activities. This represents 7 Tourist Offices, 50 leisure sites and nearly 17.000 commercial beds for which we collect the results of the previous year each year.

These results are presented in terms of the quantity of supply available by intermunicipal territory (number of commercial beds by type of accommodation, number of leisure sites by category), attendance by nationality, turnover and direct employment generated.

Our main source of information comes from Ardennes tourist service providers, who, by responding to our annual survey, allow us to present analyzes that are faithful to the reality on the ground. We take advantage of this forum to thank them again!

These observations are cross-referenced and shared with existing initiatives at regional (ORT Grand Est) and national (INSEE – ADN Tourisme) levels.

All the data for year N – 1 are available in June of year N. This information is intended for design offices, elected officials, the media, but also and above all for local project leaders who find many decision-making aids, whether in the field of frequentation by nationality, their evolution, the competitive offer, trends by intermunicipal territory, by type of project.

2022 tourist season: main points to remember

The 2022 season will have been excellent thanks to the sustained presence of French customers and the noticeable return of certain European customers (mainly British and Germans) in addition to the loyalty of Belgian and Dutch customers.

The high season was favored by very mild weather, which primarily benefited accommodation and outdoor activities (campsites, HLL, outdoor leisure sites, hikes, etc.). The late season also benefited from favorable weather, despite inflation which penalized purchasing power as well as fuel shortages.

The main accommodations that have benefited from this excellent season are campsites and rental accommodations.

The main trends observed are falling spending, and increases in length of stay, internet booking, and last minute sales.

Economic surveys:

In addition to the annual figures for Ardennes tourism, the Tourist Development Agency conducts a survey before and during the season, in partnership with the Regional Tourism Observatory.

This survey aims to provide real-time information on the summer trend.

More than 600 questionnaires are sent by email. Here again, the quality of the analyzes relies heavily on the questionnaire return rates and we are still counting on your cooperation to respond in large numbers to the 2 surveys that you will receive in mid-August! This collaborative work allows us to direct our marketing actions, mainly on social networks, according to the results observed. Finally, it allows you to compare your activity with the general situation on the territory.

And to complete, other indicators at your disposal:

In addition to the "key figures for Ardennes tourism" and the summer economic survey, various files are available:

Destination Ardenne key figures : this concerns the cross-border partnership around the EEIG Destination Ardenne (representing the Ardenne brand).

Tourism Vision flow : Since 2020, the ADT has partnered with the Regional Tourism Observatory to obtain data from the telephone company Orange concerning tourist mobility flows in the Ardennes department. From the relay antennas and the mobile network, Orange provides monthly (with daily focus if desired) attendance statistics by origin (locals, French by region of origin, foreigners by nationality), by type (excursionist, tourist or resident) with comparisons to the previous year. These data, now available at the departmental level, could tomorrow be analyzed at the intermunicipal level according to the needs of the territories.

►Air DNA: Since March 2021, the ADT has collected several indicators on the activity of Air B&B and Homeaway (Abritel) rentals each month, at the intermunicipal level, whether for furnished tourist accommodation or bed and breakfasts. These data are available for each month of 2022, and for each intermunicipal territory.
