A creation by the architect Clément Métezeau

The Place Ducale project was entrusted to Clément Métezeau, brother of Louis Métezeau, famous for the creation of the Place des Vosges in Paris..

From this lineage emerges a common architectural model:

  • a large, perfectly regular square
  • a series of arcades surrounding the square,
  • elegant pavilions in the Henri IV style
  • a harmonious blend of fine materials
  • a clear visual read, designed to be perceived at a single glance.

These similarities often lead to the Place Ducale being called the "twin sister" of the Place des Vosges.

A jewel of 17th-century architecture

Built between 1606 and 1624, the Place Ducale captivates with its unique style..
Each pavilion rests on an elegant combination of local materials:

  • Yellow stone from Dom-le-Mesnilwarm and bright
  • Blue slatesCharacteristics of Ardennes roofs
  • Red brickswhich highlight the facades and create a harmonious contrast

This combination of colors gives the square an incomparable charm, especially at sunset.
The arcades that border the square add an aesthetic and practical dimension, offering shelter and perspective.

Contemporary metamorphosis: a space given back to pedestrians

Au 20e In the 20th century, a vast parking lot occupied the center of the square. A major redevelopment has transformed the space:

  • disappearance of the parking lot in favor of a surface of elegant paving stones,
  • reinstallation of the historic fountain in the center, a symbol of the origins.
  • relocation of the statue of Charles de Gonzague, which was located in the center of the Place Ducale, to the top of Rue Pierre Bérégovoy
  • expansion of pedestrian zones, terraces and promenade areas.

This transformation has restored the square to its historical character and its original purpose: a place for living, exchanging ideas and relaxing.

The Place Ducale, the vibrant heart of the Charleville-Mézières events
