- 1424 – Construction begins by Évrard de La Marck : a fortress intended to protect the city and its inhabitants.
- 15th-16th centuries – Successive expansions by the La Marck family, then by the La Tour d'Auvergne family : the castle becomes the heart of an independent principality.
- 1549 – Sedan is established as a sovereign, independent principality of the Kingdom of France. Protestant stronghold.
- 1642 – End of independence The principality is annexed to France. After the failure of a conspiracy against Richelieu, Frédéric Maurice de la Tour d'Auvergne, the last Prince of Sedan, is imprisoned. To save his life, he donates the Principality to King Louis XIII, thus formally annexing it to France.
