A story etched in stone

Founded in the 16th century, Rocroi was built under the orders of Henry II to protect the kingdom of France from Spanish threats. Its distinctive feature: a five-pointed star plan, a fortified urbanism inspired by the modern military designs of the time. Its bastioned fortifications were reinforced by Vauban in the 17th century.
The city is most famous for the Battle of Rocroi (1643), won by the Duke of Enghien, the future Grand Condé, over the Spanish armies. This victory marked a decisive turning point in the Thirty Years' War and cemented France's military reputation in Europe.
