à FUMAY

Parcours urbain : Fumay parcours n° 3

Discovery trail in Fumay and the surrounding area.

Long route (red) with 4 points of interest.

1 - Quai du Port au Blé and Quai des Carmélites :
Along these quays, slate from the quays, transported by cart, was loaded onto barges until the 1930s. It was a place of intense commercial activity. The most prosperous inhabitants were the bargemen and merchants. They lived in the beautiful houses along the banks of the Meuse. The quays were also the site of brewing activity.

2 - Castle of the Counts of Bryas :
In 1689, the De Bryas family built this vast residence on the ruins of an old castle. Sold in 1815 to an entrepreneur who established a white lead and chicory factory there, it became in 1837 the property of the Sainte-Anne slate company until 1946, then an administrative center from 1951 to the present day.
The park is dominated by a sequoia tree given by Lafayette upon his return from the Americas.
Note the presence of a Russian milestone and an underground Gothic hall.
This castle has been listed in the supplementary inventory of historical monuments since 1972.

3 - Sainte-Anne Mill
The Moulin Sainte-Anne slate quarry is the oldest and largest operation in the Fumay basin. Mentioned in 1222, it developed considerably in the 18th century, producing 38 million slates in 1831 and 1832. Nearly 400 workers were employed there around 1850, and 217 were still working there in 1929. The quarry ceased all activity in 1934.
On October 5, 1899, the slate company Moulin Sainte-Anne applied for a concession on the slopes of La Haye to open a new slate quarry. This pit, named Sainte-Anne 2, did not become fully operational until the 1920s. Production remained low compared to that of Sainte-Anne 1.

4 - Divermonts Chapel
Deformation of green mountains, hill bordering the Fumay-Oignies road.
One can see the chapel dedicated to Our Lady, a building that has been rebuilt several times.
This place, which housed a convent run by monks of the order of Saint Jerome (Hieronymites), was destroyed during the Revolution.
