A unique story

Built between 1680 and 1685 under the impetus of Marquis Jean-Jacques de Mesmes, Count of Avaux, Lord of Asfeld, and also a State Councillor, Member of Parliament and Academician. It was designed by two talented architects: the Dominican friar François Romain and Fleury, an architect who lived on site.The main construction work was completed in 1683. An extraordinary baroque construction

Completed in 1685, the Church of Saint-Didier surprises with its complex central plan, composed of ellipses and circular volumes. Built of brick and slate, in shades of pink and grey, it appears entirely rounded, with its colonnades, domes, and cupola.
Seen from the sky, it forms a shape recognizable above all others: that of a viola da gamba, an emblematic instrument of Baroque music.
Its elegant facade, openwork dome and luminous interior testify to exceptional craftsmanship and a rare mastery of the Baroque style.
This unique feature makes it a rare monument in Europe, attracting lovers of art, history and music.
