Dominating Sedan from its promontory, the medieval Sedan fortress impresses as it seems to have come out of a fairy tale. From the moat, the walker would not be surprised to see a princess appear in a dress, as Charles IX once could secretly admire his future wife Anne of Austria (1570) walking on the ladies' bastion.
35.000 m² of surface, thick walls from 7 to 27 meters… the figures that characterize the building are exceptional. From the 15th to the 17th century, the princes and princesses of the principality of Sedan transformed what was only a simple manor in 1424 into a reputedly impregnable colossus, to which even the troops of Charles V bowed.
All year round, free or guided tours allow you to explore its formidable ramparts (discovery tours 1000 years of history) or to discover, among other things, the princely apartments (Sedan circuit a principality). Other big names and events (war of 1870) are still associated with the place: Henri II, Vauban, Napoleon 1st, Napoleon III, and especially Marshal Turenne, who was born there on September 11, 1611.

The major events of 2024
The year 2024 will be punctuated by exciting events allowing a real dive into the history of the Middle Ages: on May 11 and 12, 2024 find the Sedan Medieval Festival ; chivalry tournaments in July and August; European Heritage Days September 21 and 22, 2024 as well as the festivities for the 600th anniversary of the castle.
