Description

Fumay's slate past is what makes it so rich. Indeed, more than 300 quarries were exploited for nearly eight centuries. Let yourself be guided in the footsteps of the slate workers.

1/ Cross the N51, in front of the Crédit Agricole, follow this sidewalk to the Scailleteux fresco (work of Mr. Favaudon). Take the covered alley on the right and go up to the last houses of the Terne de la Haye.
2/ Enter the woods via the path and reach the remains of the old Saint-Anne 2 slate quarry (explanatory panels). Continue on to the Saint-Gilbert slate quarry. Cross the small platform.
3/ Leave the return route on the right and head towards the water treatment plant. Follow the small road for a few meters.
4/ Take the path on the right and continue along the Chemin des Eaux (which once supplied the town with drinking water). After 700 m, cross a stream then, further on, a second one. Immediately after this turn left for 300 m. cross the creek again.
5/ Take the first path on the left. At the intersection, go straight to the red gate and continue through the shady woods. Arrive at La Baccara (remains of an old slate quarry). After the gate, head left for a few meters and reach a verdeau (slate waste). Continue.
4/ Join the water treatment plant on the right and continue along the outward route to Saint-Gilbert.
3/ Take the path on the left and climb into the forest along the Crêtes trail. Follow the Point-de-Vue-de-la-Vallée trail. At the television relay, continue along this trail. At the junction, turn left and descend to return to the starting point.
