Did you know ?
Launet Square.
Covering more than 2 hectares, it was built in the 19th century.
In the 19th century, it was more commonly known as "Place de l'Aulnaie", because in 1867, the municipal council decided to plant alder trees there.
This type of tree thus gave its name to the square.
But why alders in particular?
The explanation lies in the soil type: The site, located in a basin, is situated above several springs. The abundance of water being particularly appreciated by alders and their roots, they developed very quickly there.
But at the end of the century, and with progress being made… canalization work was carried out in the town, thus reducing the presence of water in the ground.
There was no longer enough water for the alders, so it was decided to plant linden trees.
The trees of that time formed the identity of the place, and although the name of the place has been slightly modified, the phonetics of the name have been preserved as a legacy.
