The old town hall of Rethel, built in 1750, was destroyed on September 1, 1914 in the fire lit by the invader on the night of August 31, 1914, as well as three quarters of the town and all the archives of the town. . It was only on October 13, 1922 that the Municipal Council set an order for the reconstruction of municipal buildings, priority having been given to schools.
Among the 11 projects presented for the new Town Hall, it was that of Mr. Boulenger (architect from Reims) which was selected. The building, in the Louis XIII style, measures 40 by 14 meters and its height is also 40 meters. The materials that were used (white stone from Vierzy, red brick from Dizy and blue slates) bring out the colors of the national flag on its facade.
Started in April 1925, the work will not be finished until November 1931. The official inauguration took place on April 30, 1933. The monumental staircase, in the center of the facade, arrives at a wrought iron gate, the official entrance to the building. The large salon d'honneur is entirely covered with canvases by the Rethélois painter Eugène Thiery.
