La Chartreuse du Mont Dieu
Oldest Charterhouse in France
In 1131, a group of Carthusian monks began construction of the Chartreuse du Mont-Dieu. Thirteen years later, the wooden building was completed.
Composed of monks, this monastic community lived a simple and austere life. In 1275, the monastery barn was built. It remains the oldest building today.
In the 4th century, the Chartreuse du Mont-Dieu held an economic empire of 200 hectares.
Until recently, the Saint-Etienne pavilion, the Saint-Bruno pavilion and the gardener's pavilion, erected in the 16th century, were still standing, visible from the road and the hiking trails that run alongside the estate.
They were unfortunately badly damaged by a fire on November 2, 2025.
