Musée des Spahis
Created on the initiative of the Friendly Association of Spahis, the Spahis Museum of La Horgne (Ardennes) shows the importance of the troops of North Africa, and more particularly of the Spahis, in French military history.
Its location is emblematic. In the village of La Horgne, between May 13 and 15, 1940, the 3rd Brigade of Mounted Spahis held Gudérian's 1st German Armored Division in check.
The visit is structured around six themes:
The horse, man's companion, to life and death; the men composing the regiments of Spahis, of different origins, cultures and faiths; the sociability of the Spahis which has forged an exemplary community; the Ardennes in 1940 and the beginnings of the Second World War; the battle of La Horgne, a dramatic but symbolic episode of the missions carried out; remembering and recognizing the sacrifice of these soldiers.
The museum presents in particular the combat and ceremonial uniforms of the Spahis, an officer's saddle, multiple objects from the daily life of the Spahis, armaments, decorations.
The Spahis museum will take you into the world of these extraordinary men with a tragic destiny. A walking path, opposite the village site, traces the progress of the Battle of La Horgne.
In the village of La Horgne, you will also find an interpretation trail of the battle, a memorial monument and a military cemetery where Christian and Muslim tombs are combined.
OPEN EVERY SUNDAY from MID-MAY to MID-SEPTEMBER (from 14 p.m. to 00 p.m.) by reservation all year round for groups.
