Eglise Saint Martin de Bazeilles

The Saint-Martin church is a building that was built by the architect Léon-Henry Couty following a subscription launched in 1872. The work began in 1902 and the date present in the mosaic of the choir is that of the consecration of the church, April 28, 1904. Two other projects had previously been established by the architects Racine of Charleville and Thion of Paris but they had not been retained. The old church had a Romanesque nave and tower and a choir bearing the date of 1469. It was burned down by the Bavarians during the Battle of Bazeilles in 1870.
The Saint-Martin church, located in the centre of the village and facing west, has an elongated plan with a nave with three naves and six bays. The western massif includes an organ loft and two spiral staircases, while a bell tower is attached to it. The choir has a straight bay, a three-sided apse, and an adjoining sacristy. The building, built in limestone rubble, has arcades, a false triforium, twin bays and oculi. The nave is covered with domes, the choir with a ribbed vault. The whole is covered with slate, with varied roofs depending on the part.
