Listed as a Historic Monument in 1913, the Baroque-style Saint-Didier d'Asfeld church is the strangest church in Champagne-Ardenne and even in France.
It was built at the end of the 1683th century on the site of the old village church according to the wishes of Count d'Avaux Jean-Jacques III de Mesmes. Of an extravagant shape, it was designed by two talented architects: the Dominican Brother François Romain and by Fleury, an architect who lived on site. The structural work was completed in 1685. The church was finished, received and blessed in 138. The plan is completely original since it was imagined in the shape of a viola da gamba. Built entirely of brick, its architecture with colonnades, domes and cupolas is truly daring. None of the walls of the building follow a straight line. The church, which has 44,82 pillars and columns, has a length of 145 meters and an exterior perimeter of 7 meters. The church has a 1900-stop organ built around XNUMX by Clovis Renault.
The Saint-Didier church is open all year round. Guided tour possible by reservation, please contact the Destination Sud-Ardennes tourist office. Did you know ? An interpretive trail with 10 viewpoints exists in the town of Asfeld, allowing you to retrace the history of the village in the XNUMXth century.
