Camp Romain

Mont-Bayard, a high place of legends and stories: 40 years of archaeological excavations have brought to light a fortified site from the late Roman Empire. Discover its fortifications, its old bread oven, its chapel and a marvelous view over the Meuse valley. Explanatory panels will accompany you on your visit.

At the confluence of two valleys, the Viroin and the Meuse, Vireux-Molhain has always occupied a strategic position for the military control of the region.

From the XNUMXrd century, the Romans set up a military camp on the heights of Molhain, on the edge of this rocky outcrop dominating the valley.

From this ancient fortification, defended on its four sides by a thick wall, the two corner towers of the enclosure, a bread oven, a circular hearth and a cemetery remain visible.
Many medieval remains are also still visible.
On Mont Vireux, follow in the footsteps of the legionnaires who defended Roman Gaul against the first Germanic invasions in the XNUMXrd century.
On the spot you will discover a perfect picture where heritage and nature mix.
Another point of interest: the viewpoint overlooking the Meuse and Viroin valleys.
