Today, Gaston Roze metallurgical plant
In 1878, Jules Mathieu acquired a brewery founded by Jean Arnould and Marie Cocu in Balan (Ardennes). The company was taken over by his son Charles in 1910, then became "Mathieu Fils Aîné et Cie" in 1938. Producing 5 hectoliters of beer annually as well as sodas and lemonades, the brewery reached a total of 000 to 20 hectoliters. In 22, a new brewing room, inspired by the Abbey of Saint-Remi in Rochefort, was built. Renamed "Brasseries Mathieu" in 000, the activity ceased in 1958.
The buildings include a concrete brewhouse housing vats, boilers and a laboratory, as well as a former limestone brewery with a wooden frame and tiles. Since its closure, the site has been occupied by the Gaston Roze establishments.
