From 1560 to 1642, La Chapelle was part of the principality of Sedan. During the French Revolution, the commune was provisionally called Bel-Air-aux-Bois. During the Battle of France during the Second World War, on May 12, 1940, the Germans of Ferdinand Schaal's 10th Panzer Division crossed the Franco-Belgian border at La Chapelle, which they captured.
