Cemetery accessible to all and open during the day
Balan, like Bazeilles, experienced deadly Franco-German fighting on 1 September 1870, particularly in the castle grounds, where the fierce resistance of the French caused many Prussian victims. In an ossuary surrounded by a large enclosure in the heart of the cemetery, the bodies of 228 French soldiers, 613 Germans and 8 civilians.
A double stele was placed against the wall in memory of the inhabitants of Balan who were victims of the events of 1 and 4 September 1870 (four children). On the base of the monument, a plaque commemorates the memory of the sniper Charles Durand, who died on 15 September 1870.
The small cemetery contains a few sculptures, including the imposing double sculpture of a mother and her daughter (Catherine and Adele by Zadurowicz), of unusual proportions in such a cemetery. This quiet place brings to mind this tragic fight which claimed many victims.
