Ancienne usine métallurgique des Etablissements Clément Bayard
Currently the site of the Macérienne
In 1878, Gustave Adolphe Clément founded Clément et Cie in Paris to manufacture bicycles. In 1894, he created three factories, including La Macérienne in Mézières. The company turned to automobiles in 1897, became Clément-Bayard in 1904, then specialized after 1919 in foundry, machinery (tractors, excavators) and metal processing.
The plant, which employed 650 people in 1938, uses advanced technologies to produce its energy, with turbines and power plants. Closed in 1984, it has housed the municipal services of Charleville-Mézières since the 2000s.
Its buildings, built between 1894 and 1959, bear witness to industrial architecture with structures made of rubble, bricks and metal frames.
