This structure, built between 1877 and 1879, is part of the Séré de Rivières fortified system (forts built along a line stretching from the English Channel to the Mediterranean Sea). Typical of the military architecture of the early Third Republic, it is the only fortification of its kind built in the Ardennes. Fort des Ayvelles is constructed of dressed stone and surrounded by a ditch and a counterscarp. To the east of the fort, another building, known as the Battery, completes the complex. Its masonry is covered with earthworks to withstand the artillery fire of the time. The invention of new explosives in 1885, which made new fortifications vulnerable, and the priority given to fortifications in the east, explain the fort's decommissioning in 1899. An armored casemate and a cavernous powder magazine were the only modernizations it underwent. In August 1914, he witnessed the rapid advance of the invader in France. The estate is located on the edge of the departmental road 34, halfway between Villers Semeuse and La Francheville. The entrance to the estate is indicated by the presence of an information panel.
