Eglise de Saint Pierre de Villers Cernay

Closed to the public
The date 1824, inscribed on the western face of the bell tower, seems to mark the construction of the nave, while an inscription dated 1724 in the south wall of the choir, mentioning Abbot George Philippe Duhoule, probably indicates the elevation of the choir. A plaque also commemorates Abbot Lucien Hunin, builder of the churches of Villers-Cernay and La Chapelle, who died in 1878.

The church of Saint-Pierre, located in the centre of the village, has an elongated plan: a single-aisle nave, a rectangular choir with a flat chevet, two chapels forming a false transept, a sacristy to the north and a storage room to the south. The timber-framed bell tower surmounts the eastern ridge of the nave. Built in limestone rubble with ashlar chains, the structure is covered with a cement coating. The floor alternates between black marble in the central aisle and limestone elsewhere.

The building, pierced with semi-circular and twin bays, has ceilinged volumes, except for the choir which is vaulted in a depressed barrel vault. The roofs, in slate, include long sections, hips, lean-tos and a polygonal spire for the bell tower.
