Eglise Saint Martin d'Hannogne Saint Martin

Closed to the public

The church of Saint-Martin, located in the centre of the village, has a complex architectural history spanning several centuries. The base of the bell tower was built around 1200, and it is likely that the external envelope of the nave and choir also dates from this period, as evidenced by a buttress preserved on the north side of the chapel adjoining the choir. The interior of the church is said to have been progressively re-vaulted between the 16th century and 1608, the date inscribed on the keystone of the first bay of the south nave. In the 18th century, work was carried out, including the raising of the upper level of the bell tower and the construction of the chapel located on its north side. A keystone of the choir bears the date 1864, a sign of a restoration at this time, as does that of the south porch in neo-Gothic style, probably added at this time, as well as the uniform creation of the Gothic windows and the sacristy.
The church, oriented northeast, has an elongated hall-type plan. The nave, composed of two vessels, has a narrower northern vessel, serving as an aisle. The choir, located at the southern end, is accompanied by a secondary chapel to the north, forming a flat chevet against which the sacristy is backed. The bell tower and the chapel to the north form a western massif in front of the nave. Access to the attic is via an external staircase located near the northern chapel of the bell tower. The entrance portal is located to the south of the first bay of the southern vessel.
The church is built of Dom-le-Mesnil cut stone, particularly for the north chapel and the two upper levels of the bell tower. The walls of the building are composed of cut stone at different heights and mixed with rubble. Inside, the surfaces are rendered. The floor of the choir is paved with Givet bluestone tiles and black marble, while the nave and the other parts of the church are paved with limestone and black marble. The bell tower consists of three levels: the ground floor, an intermediate space and the bell chamber. The church is entirely vaulted with ribs, with lierne and tierceron vaults in the choir. The north chapel at the foot of the bell tower is vaulted in wood, with wooden ribs. The entire roof of the church is covered with slate, with a circular dome on the bell tower and a lantern. The roofs of the other parts are long-spanned with hips.
