Chapelle du Saint Lieu
Chapel visible from the outside
On January 5, 1716, in Lumes, the church tabernacle was broken into and the sacred vessels containing the hosts were stolen. A woman, accused and interrogated, confessed to having committed the theft, then, overcome with remorse, to having thrown the hosts wrapped in a cloth into the woods near Gespunsart. On March 27, Jean Ravignon discovered the hosts, which were brought back to the church.
The inhabitants, wishing to repair this sacrilegious act, asked the archbishop for permission to build a chapel on the site of the discovery. A chapel was erected there and became an annual place of pilgrimage. Destroyed during the Revolution, it was replaced by a calvary, then rebuilt in 1842 by the priest Sylvain Délescaut. The calvary is preserved higher up in the woods.
