Château de la Croix Piot
Private property, not open to visitors.
The Château de la Croix Piot, located in Donchery (Ardennes) at the foot of the strategic Marfée massif, has marked history on several occasions. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, on August 31, the King of Prussia, William, established his headquarters there, accompanied by Bismarck and Moltke. Legend has it that from this place, William observed the heroic charges on the Illy plateau during the battle of September 1 and pronounced the famous words: "Oh! the brave people." In 1914, during the First World War, the French artillery positioned at the Croix Piot repelled German attempts to cross the Meuse on wooden bridges.
