Château de Remilly les Pothées

Municipality of Remilly les Pothées.

The fortified house of Remilly dominates the impressive valleys of the Sormonne and the Audry, the territory known as the Pothées, in potestate (owned) by the bishops of Reims throughout the Ancien Régime. The castle dates from the years 1575-1577 and was built by Antoine de Rymbert, son of Jean, lord of Arreux. The pediment of the main door displays the year “1577”. The castle, of rectangular plan, was flanked by two round towers, placed on two opposite angles, and two watchtowers of square structure, in corbelling on the other two angles. Only the east tower remains, strong walls almost 1,50 m thick, as well as the base of the neighboring watchtower. The corbelled turret on the west corner dates back to the alterations of the 1920s. The “Renaissance” gatehouse, supported by slender brackets, is also decorative.
