Mémorial des chasseurs d'Afrique

The Prussian and Bavarian artillery, more numerous and more effective, quickly neutralized the French artillery and then, with its terribly effective fire, massacred with impunity our magnificent regiments of Chasseurs d'Afrique, Hussars, Cuirassiers…
General Margueritte's cavalrymen could only charge for honor in a desperate situation, but their heroic charges were the last and most pathetic in the history of the French cavalry.
The Memorial and the stelae of the twelve regiments of the Chasseurs d'Afrique, arranged to the right and left of the central monument, are indeed dedicated to the memory of the Chasseurs d'Afrique. However, this monument, the work of sculptor Emile Guillaume, bears the large inscription "To the honor of the French cavalry" across its entire width, leaving no doubt as to the national importance of this landmark. It is also known as "the brave men" to recall that the King of Prussia, William I, admiring this heroism, could not help but exclaim "Ah, the brave men!" while observing the battle through binoculars from the Roman road to Frénois.
At the foot of the monument, in 1950, the body of Lieutenant-Colonel de Liniers, who commanded the 3rd Regiment of African Light Cavalry, and those of approximately 150 officers and cavalrymen who fell during the charges were brought together under a large slab. They had previously been buried at the foot of the oldest oak tree in Sedan, surrounded by an enclosure that remains today a place of remembrance and reflection, at a place called "Fond de Cazal".
