Eglise Abbatiale Notre Dame de Mouzon

Built in 1230, on the remains of the Romanesque abbey, the church is built in the pure Gothic style.
At the end of the 12th century, the archbishop of Reims planned to create a bishopric in Mouzon.

We will then demolish the choir of the church to build a larger, more beautiful, more slender one, because “Early Gothic Art” is about to supplant Romanesque art.
After a violent fire in 1212, the architect in charge of the reconstruction played for consistency by reusing these principles of “Early Gothic Art”.

In 1852, new restorations were carried out by Emile Boeswillwald, a contemporary of Viollet Le Duc, in particular the destruction of the large flamboyant glass roof.
In 1918, it escaped the fire caused by the Germans during their retreat.

– A curiosity: the small opening 60 cm high and a few centimeters wide in the north wall of the Sainte Joan of Arc chapel…
It is the lodging of the recluse.
