Eglise Saint-Rémi de Cheveuges

Closed to the public
The church of Saint-Rémi, located to the east of the village and facing northeast, has an elongated plan with a three-aisled nave of three bays, followed by a bell tower housing the choir. A spiral staircase turret is attached to the south of the choir, and the sacristy is attached to this wall. Built in limestone rubble with ashlar chains, its interior walls are rendered. The floor of the nave is paved with black marble and blue Givet stone, while the choir has a checkerboard of veined black and red marble. The walls of the nave are pierced with rectangular bays, except for the small semicircular bays of the west facade and the bays of the choir, also semicircular. The western portal, flanked by buttresses, has a semicircular arch pierced with an orifice forming a machicolation. The pediment houses an ornamented niche, while the door is framed by columns with cubic capitals supporting an arch decorated with low-relief motifs. The central vessel of the nave is ceilinged, with exposed timbers to the north and a panelled half-barrel to the south, the choir being vaulted with ribs. The church is entirely covered with slate. The nave, dating from the 12th century, was remodeled in 1683. The choir, built in the 13th century, as well as the bell tower, restored in 1641, were repaired after damage suffered during the Second World War and restored in 195
