Eglise Saint Nicaise de Fagnon

Closed to the public
A text dated 1696 mentions the construction of the church of Saint-Nicaise, probably founded about 200 years earlier, with Gothic elements attesting to its antiquity, such as the bay of the apse. A chronogram, now lost, indicated 1583. During a visit in 1676, the archbishop suggested its demolition because of its poor condition and its proximity to the abbey church, but the parishioners opposed this decision, and the ban was lifted. Repairs were carried out, as evidenced by a date of 1698 on a wall. In 1763, the inhabitants asked the abbey for help in restoring the choir, but the monks refused, leading to a trial in 1768 which condemned the abbey to carry out the work. Although the details are not known, it is likely that the bell tower was built at this time.
The parish of Fagnon is mentioned in a pouillé of 1306, with the right of patronage attributed to the abbot of Septfontaines and the tithes to the abbey. The church is located in the southern part of the village, with a chancel facing northeast, and has an elongated plan. Its single nave leads directly to the chancel, which has a straight bay and a three-sided apse. The bell tower, located at the front of the nave, also serves as an entrance vestibule, while a sacristy is attached to the south flank. The main facade of the bell tower is in cut stone, while the rest is in rubble. The interior walls are rendered, with marble paving in the central aisle. The church, with a single level and semi-circular bays, is covered with slate, with long-span roofs and a polygonal spire for the bell tower.
