Eglise Saint Mathieu de la Chapelle

Closed to the public
The Saint-Mathieu church is located in the southern part of the village. It has an elongated plan. The single-aisled nave is followed by the choir which is in the form of a semicircular apse; the liturgical choir encroaches on the last part of the nave. The sacristy is built against the northern side of the nave and the timber bell tower surmounts the ridge of the nave on the east side. A spiral staircase set in the southwest corner of the nave provides access to an organ gallery from which the attic can be accessed by means of a ladder. The building is built of limestone rubble with a stone chain except for the western facade which is made of small and medium-sized Dom-le-Mesnil stone and the buttresses are made of brick. The interior faces of the walls are rendered. The floor of the central aisle of the nave and the choir is covered with a checkerboard of black, grey and white marble. The building has only one level pierced by large, medium-sized semi-circular bays. The nave is covered by a false pointed barrel vault and the choir by a false cul-de-four. All the roofs of the building are made of slate.
