Eglise Saint Martin de Glaire – Villette

Closed to the public
The choir of the church of Saint-Martin dates from around 1200 and was restored in 1519 as indicated by an inscription engraved and painted on one of the vaults of the choir (same type of inscription in the church of Donchery). The nave was rebuilt in 1769. The murals which cover the walls of the nave date from the second half of the 2th century. Originally, it was probably a castle chapel because it is located in the immediate vicinity of the castle of Villette. During the First World War, the occupier removed a bell dating from 19.
The Saint-Martin church is located in the centre of the village. It has an elongated plan. The single-aisle nave is followed by the square-shaped choir with a flat chevet. The timber-framed bell tower is located at the ridge of the nave, on the western side. A winding staircase provides access to an organ loft. The building is built of limestone rubble with a stone chain except for the western façade which is entirely made of large-scale stone. The interior faces of the walls are rendered and the floor is paved with limestone. The building has only one level pierced with large basket-handle bays in the nave and small lancets in the choir. The nave is ceilinged and the choir has ribbed vaults. The western façade is decorated with four Tuscan pilasters which frame the portal surmounted by a niche. All of the building's roofs are made of slate. The nave and the choir are covered by a long-span roof with an exposed gable and the bell tower by a polygonal spire.
