Eglise Saint Martin de Sapogne et Feuchères

Closed to the public
The church of Saint-Martin, located to the south of the village on a hill, dates mainly from the 1793th and XNUMXth centuries. The antechoir bay was built in the XNUMXth century, followed by the bell tower and the north chapel in the XNUMXth century. The choir, built in the second half of the XNUMXth century, is composed of a straight bay and a three-sided apse, while the south chapel, added in the XNUMXth century, transformed the antechoir into a false transept. The nave and its side aisles were rebuilt in the XNUMXth century, although their piers and arches are of medieval origin. The spire of the bell tower, considered dangerous, was knocked down in XNUMX.

The church has a slightly marked Latin cross plan. The three-aisled nave with three bays is preceded by a massive bell tower and followed by the false transept and the choir. A sacristy is set against the east wall of the south chapel, while a spiral staircase is located at the corner of the bell tower and the south aisle.

Built in cut stone, the church is coated inside. The floor of the nave is in limestone slabs, that of the chapels in polychrome cement tiles, and that of the choir in black marble and limestone. The bays are large, and the bell tower has three levels, with pointed arch portals and voussoirs to the north and west. The ribbed vaults cover the whole, that of the choir being divided into six quarters.

The roofs, entirely in slate, include a pavilion roof for the bell tower, long-span roofs for the nave, the false transept and the choir (terminated by a polygonal croup), and a lean-to roof for the sacristy.
