Eglise Saint- Madeleine de Francheval

Closed to the public
The Sainte-Madeleine church is a homogeneous building from the first half of the 17th century. The sacristy was once the defensive fort of Francheval against the Spanish around 1675. Restoration of the roofs in 1879 under the direction of the architect Jules Racine and construction of a staircase on the north side in 1885.
In the Middle Ages, the Abbot of Mouzon was the patron of the parish and the tithes went to the abbey. The Sainte-Madeleine church, located in the centre of the village and facing north-east, has an elongated plan with a single nave and an imposing bell tower. The choir, composed of two bays and a three-sided apse, is flanked by a pentagonal defensive tower serving as a sacristy on the ground floor. The building, made of limestone rubble and cut stone, is rendered and has false joints. The floor of the nave is made of concrete, while that of the choir is made of polychrome cement tiles. The nave is covered with a depressed barrel vault, and the choir with ribbed vaults. The roofs are made of slate, with varied styles for the nave, the apse, the tower and the bell tower.
