Église Saint-Laurent de Saint-Laurent

Closed to the public
The church of Saint-Laurent, located in the centre of the village, dates from the 1200th century, with a choir and bell tower built around 1783. In the XNUMXth or XNUMXth centuries, two chapels forming a transept and a sacristy were added. The older nave was remodelled, with ribbed vaults and new bays in the XNUMXth century. The bell tower also had its openings redone at the beginning of the same century. Work was undertaken in XNUMX after damage caused by lightning.

With a Latin cross plan, the building includes a single-aisled nave preceded by a bell tower, a choir with two straight bays extended by a three-sided apse, and two chapels forming a false transept. The sacristy, located near the south chapel, blends harmoniously into the whole.

Built in limestone rubble with ashlar chains, the interior of the church is in exposed stone. The floor of the nave is in cement, that of the choir in Tournai stone. The ribbed vaults cover the main spaces, while the chapels are ceilinged. The building is entirely covered in slate: long-span roofs for the nave and the choir, polygonal croup for the apse, and square spire for the bell tower.
