Eglise Saint Jean Baptiste de Warcq

Closed to the public

The church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, located in the centre of the village of Warcq near the Meuse, has an elongated plan. Its western massif, dating from the beginning of the 12th century, includes a bell tower framed by two chapels, the one to the south of which houses a spiral staircase. The Gothic nave with two vessels was rebuilt between the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th century, partially preserving a Romanesque wall to the south. The non-projecting transept and the square choir, flanked by two chapels, date from the beginning of the 15th century, with additions from the 16th century, notably vaults with a hanging keystone.

Built in Dom-le-Mesnil and Romery rubble with ashlar chains, the church has walls pierced with bays with Gothic tracery and, in the western massif, small semicircular bays. The floor combines geometric patterned tiles and limestone slabs. The western façade is decorated with a semicircular portal surmounted by an oculus, while the bell tower has twin bays.

Restorations, particularly in the 20th century, have consolidated the tower and the vaults. The church is covered with a long-span roof, with a half-hip on the choir and a square spire on the bell tower.
