Château de Montvillers

Abraham Poupart bought the site in 1764 and transformed the platinum mill into a fulling mill, before building a castle in 1770, probably designed by Jean-Baptiste Jallier de Savault. In 1836, the Pouparts, ruined, sold the property to the Schneiders. During the war of 1870, major fighting took place on site. Charles-Emmanuel Palamet de Matharel, then owner, made the castle available to a congregation which used it as a school and an asylum. In 1942, it became
orphanage until 1973. The site was purchased by the General Council of the Ardennes in 1986, then by the Sedan Ardennes Sports Club in 1999. The castle, made of cut stone with a slate roof, has two floors. To the north, a U-shaped staircase leads to a door topped with a pediment. To the west, a circular avant-corps overlooks three rectangular bays. The fulling building, in the shape of a U, is made of rubble with cut stone frames. The orangery, made of cut stone, has semi-circular doors and rectangular windows.
