This is a historic first for the Ardennes: the village of Hierges has just been officially awarded the “ Most Beautiful Villages of France "! A national recognition that pays tribute to the authenticity, charm and exceptional heritage of this commune nestled at the gateway to Belgium, in the Meuse valley.

The “Most Beautiful Villages of France” label: a distinction of excellence

Created in 1982, the “Most Beautiful Villages of France” label aims to promote and preserve municipalities with fewer than 2,000 inhabitants that have at least two listed sites in the area and demonstrate the motivation of the entire municipality. Today, 184 villages spread across 72 departments are part of this exceptional network.

Rigorous expertise

To achieve this distinction, villages must meet more than 30 rigorous criteria : architectural quality, heritage enhancement, landscape harmony, local dynamism, etc. A committee of experts visits the site to evaluate each application. A re-evaluation is carried out every six to nine years.

Hierges, a medieval jewel in the heart of the Ardennes

Located a few kilometers from Givet, a stone's throw from Belgium, Hierges seduces with its medieval atmosphere and its enchanting natural settingDominated by a 9th century castle, the village reveals its cobbled streets, its houses made of blue Givet stone, and its slate roofs. Between the Ardennes forest and open landscapes overlooking the Meuse valley, which can be admired from its ramparts, Hierges, a 3-flower village, is set in a natural setting which adds to the charm of the place.
Hierges Castle, rebuilt in the 16th century in Renaissance style, has been classified as a historical monument since 1980.

A well-deserved national recognition

The labeling of Yesterday is not the result of chance : after two unsuccessful applications in 2004 and 2010, The municipality was able to convince thanks to exemplary work in terms of signage, development of public spaces and parking areas as well as the enhancement of heritage. This national recognition is a source of immense pride for the 139 inhabitants.

This label is a chance additional opportunity to promote the area, stimulate the local economy and welcome visitors keen to discover a village where time seems to have stood still.
