In the Ardennes, there are always new gems to discover. This is the case today with these two museums which reveal a little of the history and identity of our department. Places to visit and why not, in rainy weather.

  • The Ardennes Horse Museum in Buzancy
  • The Michel Paradon slate museum in Fumay

Ardennes Horse Museum

Ce Ardennes Horse Museum, carried by enthusiasts, is located in an astonishing place: the former outbuildings of Château Augeard in Buzancy. These bouveries (ox stables) are arranged horseshoe… Perfect location for a museum on the Ardennes horse, this ancient and rustic breed of draft horse. This very massive horse is renowned for its resistance and its power, which would explain why under the Napoleonic Empire, these Ardennes horses would have been the only ones to survive the Russian campaign.

The Ardennes Horse Museum welcomes you every Wednesday in July and August, from 14 p.m. to 17 p.m.

Our tip

Take the opportunity to also treat yourself to a bit of fun in a tavern atmosphere in the games room of yesteryear also installed in the Communes at the same times.

Slate Museum Michel Paradon in Fumay

In the Ardennes, slate is king. The territory has long exploited this wealth and the slate colors the Ardennes roofs with its blue and purple hues, whether here in Fumay but also in Rimogne or Charleville-Mézières and its famous Place Ducale.

The last fumacian slate pits closed 50 years ago. In 1971, an enthusiast, Michel Paradon, opened a small museum in this former Carmelite convent. Closed in 2010, a new museum to which we gave its name will see the light of day in 2023 thanks to the will of enthusiasts who wanted to restore their letters of nobility to this hard profession of slate. This museum offers a moving immersion in the daily life of these men with descent in the elevator leading to the galleries, reconstruction of scenes: a kitchen interior, background work, surface work (cutting) and the coffee that closes the day...

To complete your visit, a slate and heritage QR code is scattered around the city: discovery of typical streets, verdeaux, the fresco by Georges Armand Favaudon Les Escailleux and the bust of the trade unionist who created the mining status.

Fresco “The Scailleteux” by Georges Armand Favaudon

From October 1: Saturday and Sunday from 14 p.m. to 17 p.m.
