Founded in 971 by the Archbishop of Reims, it is made up of three buildings:
– a main building (current retirement home),
– a Colombier (Tourist Office)
– outbuildings (Felt Museum).
Until 1671, the city walls and a moat surrounded everything.
Until 1789, the monks lived on the products of agricultural land (donated by the archbishop), the forest, rivers, mills and aromatic plants grown in the abbey garden.
After 1789, the establishment was transformed into a civil hospice, the garden was preserved. Over time, it was transformed into a pleasure garden, maintained by the gardener of the retirement home.
